I am a professor of history at Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, Georgia.   I  specialize in the colonial and revolutionary periods of United States history, focusing on the study of History and Memory. I have presented several papers examining various ways in which early U.S. history is remembered in different genres. In addition, I have contributed chapters in edited volumes on the subject of history in popular culture including β€œA Past to Make Us Proud: U.S. History According to Disney” in Learning From Micky, Donald and Walt: Essays on Disney’s Edutainment Films (McFarland, 2011). My interest in John Adams began during the United States Bicentennial, when I first saw the musical 1776.   My recent book, π‘Ήπ’†π’Žπ’†π’Žπ’ƒπ’†π’“π’Šπ’π’ˆ 𝑱𝒐𝒉𝒏 π‘¨π’…π’‚π’Žπ’”: 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒅 π‘·π’“π’†π’”π’Šπ’…π’†π’π’• π’Šπ’ π‘―π’Šπ’”π’•π’π’“π’š, π‘΄π’†π’Žπ’π’“π’š 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑷𝒐𝒑𝒖𝒍𝒂𝒓 π‘ͺ𝒖𝒍𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆 is the culmination of that interest. This book was named an Outstanding Academic Title by Choice Reviews.

Recently, I was named an Adams Memorial Foundation Scholar.  You may read more about the Foundation and donate to the cause at https://theadamsmemorial.org/scholars/

New Article Published in The Conversation!

New Article published in The Conversation!

"Alien and Sedition Acts were reviled in their time, and John Adams was not sorry to see them go" was just published in The Conversation.  Navigating the Alien and Sedition Acts of 1798 is difficult for an Adams scholar.  Here is my attempt to put the Sedition Act in context and suggest that there is blame to share.  John Adams should not be perpetually punished for one misguided signature.

 Read the story.

New Op-Ed Published!

At the request of the Adams Memorial Foundation, I wrote this Op-Ed on why this is the time for a John Adams memorial in Washington, D.C. It was published on October 30, 2024, John Adams's 289th birthday.  The link to the piece is below.
